Geneva, March 5, 2014 (SPS) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria Mr. Ramtane Lamamra said today in Geneva that his country encourages the Human Rights Council to continue “closely follow” the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s recommendations with regard to the protection of human rights in Western Sahara.

Speaking during the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council, underway in Geneva, Mr. Lamamra urged the Council to go forward in the direction of implementing the UN chief’s recommendations relating to the protection of human rights in Western Sahara.

He also recalled the audience that Western Sahara has yet to be granted a referendum on self-determination in accordance with the pertinent UN resolutions.

It should be recalled that the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council kicked off Monday, in the presence of a Saharawi delegation includes human rights activists from occupied Western Sahara and Saharawi human rights components. (SPS)
