Saharawi self-determination: UN Council urged to issue binding resolutions

Submitted on

Algiers, March 4, 2014 (SPS) - The UN Security Council should promulgate "pertinent and binding" resolutions about Saharawi people's right to self-determination," instead of resorting to prevarication," Boudjemaa Souileh, a teacher of International Law and a permanent member of the Arab Lawyers Council, said Monday in Algiers.

Speaking at a news conference, in the Saharawi information centre, about French policy in the region and Western Sahara issue in the light of the tension in French-Moroccan relations, Souileh called on the Security Council to adopt resolutions binding on Morocco, to get it to accept the holding of a referendum through which the Saharawi people will decide on their fate in line with the international legality."

Former chairman of Upper House's Committee on Foreign Relations added that the principle of self-determination "is scorned, as all reports issued by UN agencies, specialized bodies, governmental and non-governmental organizations that support this right (self-determination), stress Moroccan authorities' violations of human rights Western Sahara in reports containing no binding decision.
