Bir Lehlou (liberated territories), Jan 17, 2014 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz has demanded “an urgent action” by the United Nations to protect the Saharawi civilians, who are subject to Morocco’s violence and repression.
“The United Nations cannot stand idly by in front of the scenes of violence, injuries, blood, assaults and repeated raids perpetrated against innocent civilians, which are taking place in a territory under its direct responsibility,” said President Mohamed Abdelaziz, in a letter addressed to the Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the UN.
“Such systematic and escalating violence, which is targeting the Saharawis in the occupied territories, in southern Morocco and even inside of Morocco, has started to take an intimidating and serious form and to affect the Saharawi citizens even inside their safe houses,” added the President of the Republic.
He, therefore, went on saying that the Moroccan occupying state is persisting in its blind violence, late of which its crackdown on a peaceful Saharawi demonstration held Wednesday, 15 January 2014, in the city of El Aaiun, leaving 70 injured.
Given this grave situation, the President reminded the UN of its responsibility in ensuring the lives and safety of the Western Sahara population.
“Moroccan occupying state’s violations of human rights in the occupied Saharawi territories can no longer be tolerated,” writes President Mohamed Abdelaziz, calling on the UN to “speedily intervene” to end Morocco’s serious escalation of repression, as to seep up the establishment of a mechanism allowing the MINURSO Mission to protect, monitor and report about human rights in the Western Sahara.
