Submitted on

Bir Lehlou (liberated territories), January 12, 2014 (SPS)  – Sahrawi President Mohamed Abdelaziz called on the UN to assume its responsibilities in taking necessary measures to stop Western Sahara’s natural resources “plunder.”

President Abdelaziz wrote in a message to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, that "the member countries of the UN have to honor their commitments under Chapter 11 of the UN Charter, and thus to take the necessary measures to stop the looting of natural resources which are the property of the Saharawi people."

Referring to companies operating nearby Sahrawi coasts with the complicity of some States, after approval by the European Parliament of a memorandum of agreement on fisheries with Morocco, the Saharawi president added: "if urgent measures are not taken, the illegal operations of exploration and exploitation of the territory’s natural resources would weaken further efforts by UN to reach a political solution to ensure the self-determination of the Saharawi people."

President Mohamed Abdelaziz also mentioned in his message the "intent" of certain companies and foreign governments to participate in the plunder of Western Sahara resource, as "Cosmos" company specializing in energy, and which plans to undertake operations of exploration and drilling in Saharawi waters.

"Western Sahara is not an integral part of Morocco, but a non-autonomous territory under the UN Charter pending decolonization," he concluded. (SPS)
