Morocco-EU fisheries agreement will amplify plunder of Saharawi wealth

Submitted on

Algiers, Dec 4, 2013 (SPS) - The Saharawi Minister of Cooperation Mr. Brahim Mojtar urged the European Parliament not to vote for the fisheries agreement with Morocco, declaring that is the agreement is concluded, it will only "amplify" the looting of Sahrawi wealth to more than $ 4.5 billion per year.

"One of the Saharawi government priorities is the repeal of Morocco- EU fisheries agreement," said Mojtar in a statement to the Algerian Press Service (APS), calling on MEPs not to vote for the agreement to respect international law and the future of the Saharawi people.

"The European Parliament must respect the opinions of European organizations and political parties that oppose the agreement, which includes the territorial waters of Western Sahara," the same official added.

For Mokhtar, "the natural resources currently plundered by Morocco are estimated at $4.5 billion per year." These revenues are "used for the purchase of weapons to brutally suppress the struggle of the Saharawi people claiming their legitimate right to self-determination."

If the EU votes this agreement, it will be, once again, complicit with the Moroccan occupation and encourage it to violate international law, warned the Saharawi Minister.

"Spain and France are the most eager to conclude the fisheries agreement assuming the principle of common interests between these countries and the Moroccan occupation," Mr. Brahim Mojtar recalled.

He called on the UN to "act quickly" to stop this agreement and settle definitively the Saharawi issue by organizing free elections for self-determination. (SPS)
