Algiers, December 1, 2013 (SPS) - Representatives of civil society organizations of Algeria, Tunisia and Western Sahara have denounced Sunday in Algiers the human rights violations in the occupied Sahrawi territories and the Morocco's "illegal" exploitation of Sahrawi natural resources.

In a final statement issued at the end of a meeting that brought together representatives of civil society organizations of the three countries, the participants denounced "Morocco's violation of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara."

They also called for putting an end to "these serious violations" and stressed the need to "expand the prerogatives of the United Nations Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to human rights monitoring."

"The standstill regarding the Western Sahara issue doesn't serve the interests of the peoples of the region and their aspiration for building the great Maghreb," the statement said.

The representatives of Algerian, Tunisian and Sahrawi civil society organizations also called for "the strengthening of the international solidarity with the Sahrawi people through the creation of a coordination committee comprising representatives from the African, European and Asian continents."

The participants also hailed "Algeria's role in the fight against terrorism and its collaboration with sister and neighbouring countries to end this scourge and denouncing the terrorist acts threatening the Maghreb region." (SPS)
