Shaheed El Hafed, November 23, 2013 (SPS) - Following the joint statement between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco, after the visit by the King of Morocco to Washington, the Sahrawi government and the Polisario Front has noted the ‘special’ status given to the issue of decolonization of Western Sahara in the talks between the two parties, in statement released Saturday by the Ministry of Information.
The statement also expressed satisfaction to the ‘attention and interest’ given by the United States to the issue of human rights in Western Sahara, which ‘reflects deep concern about the violations committed against the Saharawi over more than 38 years of Moroccan occupation’ and supports the international demand for the need to mandate the UN mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara ‘MINURSO’ with monitoring and reporting on this issue, the statement added.
Further the statement noted the support of the United states to a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara conflict, in the context of the United Nations and the efforts undertaken in this regard by Mr. Christopher Ross , the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary -General.
The Sahrawi government and the Polisario Front are looking for concrete proceedings to reflect the U.S. commitment to accelerate the pace of the solution in the framework of the United Nations, protect human rights in Western Sahara and improve the living conditions of its people, the statement said.
for the Sahrawi government and the Polisario Front, the solution can not be democratic and fair unless it enables the Saharawi people to its inalienable right of self-determination and independence through free and transparent referendum, the statement concluded. (SPS)
