US-Western Sahara Foundation urges Obama to use influence over Morocco

Submitted on

Washington, November 22, 2013 (SPS) – Chairperson of US- Western Sahara Foundation, Suzanne Scholte, sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to use his influence on Morocco to finally resolve Western Sahara conflict through a referendum of self-determination, while insisting on the issue of human rights.

''When you meet with King Mohammed VI, I request from you to consider that the time has come for the United States to use influence on Morocco to end the conflict through a long-promised referendum, while human rights monitoring must be part of this process,'' said Scholte in a letter ahead of meeting between President Obama and Moroccan King on Friday in Washington.

According to her, the only other option is to bring Morocco '' to end its illegal occupation of Western Sahara so the peace, stability and economic prosperity can be brought to the region.''

In addition, Scholte asked President Obama to engage further efforts so that the United States present, once again, a draft resolution to the UN Security Council for the introduction of a mechanism for monitoring human rights within the United Nations Mission for the organization of a referendum (MINURSO) .
