Washington, November 13, 2013 (SPS) - The international human rights organization “Human Rights Watch” (HRW) urged Monday Moroccan Chief of Government Abdelilah Benkirane to respect the human rights of the Saharawi people in their claims for self-determination.
This call was launched in a joint letter from HRW with seven other regional and international human rights organizations, in anticipation of the election, Tuesday, of new members of UN Human Rights Council by the UN General Assembly.
In a letter sent to the Moroccan Chief of Government in which it reports a particularly critical human rights situation in Morocco and occupied Western Sahara, the HRW underlines that the Moroccan authorities “introduce restrictions” against the Sahrawi people each time they express their right to self-determination.
Morocco, added HRW and other human rights NGOs, “uses several means against the Sahrawi people, particularly laws which prohibit all claims sent to Morocco on occupied Western Sahara.”
“Morocco should abolish the laws criminalizing the claims for Sahrawi people’s self-determination,” said the source. (SPS)
