General Electric pulls out of tender for building wind farm in Western Sahara

Submitted on

London, July 6, 2013 (SPS) - The American company General Electric has pulled out of a bid to construct two wind farms in the occupied Western Sahara, said Friday Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) on its website.

“After checking with our colleagues, we have decided that GE is not participating in the tender for the construction of wind farms in the occupied Western Sahara,” said the GE's Board of Directors in a letter to WSRW.

GE statement came in reply to a letter sent by WSRW to the company earlier that day. The letter outlined the NGO's concerns about the GE's participation in a tender by the Moroccan government for the construction of five wind farms, two of which were located in the occupied Western Sahara: in Al Ayun and Boujdour.

WSRW has contacted all the other bidders asking them to refrain from building infrastructures in the occupied Sahrawi territories. (SPS)
