MOSCOW , June 26, 2013 (SPS)- Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergueï Lavrov called Tuesday in Moscow for the respect for human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

“Needless to say that human rights must be respected in Western Sahara. This was underlined in the resolution adopted last April by the UN’s Security Council,” Lavrov told a joint conference with Minister of Foreign Affairs Mourad Medelci at the end of their discussions.

In this regard, he said that “Algeria’s and Russia’s positions are converging (on this issue),” adding that “these positions are not random, they’re an outgrowth of the belief of the necessity to solve problems at the international level in accordance with the international law.”

“I underline that the respect of human rights in the settlement of the Western Sahara’s issue is, indeed, very important. There is a special committee within the UN tasked with promoting human rights.”

The main task, in this context, is to define the status of Western Sahara’s territory on the basis of decisions, which have already been adopted,” he also explained.(SPS)
