MEPs meet with Saharawi human rights organizations in occupied El Aaiun

El Aaiun (occupied territories), June 23, 2013 (SPS) - A MEPs delegation from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats met Saturday with members of the Collective of Saharawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA).


The meeting focused on the miserable situation of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.


CODESA called to find a speedy solution to question of Western Sahara, through conducting a just and transparent referendum that respects the will of Saharawi people.


It, in this regard, urged the European Parliament to act urgently to lift the military and security siege imposed over the Territory, as to allow international human rights organizations to visit the territory and meet with Saharawi rights organizations and the victims of the grave human rights abuses committed by Moroccan state.


CODESA also called on the delegation to assume responsibility in pressurizing Moroccan state to respect human rights, allow the establishment of an UN mechanism to monitor and report about human rights in Western Sahara as well as the release of the Saharawi political prisoners incarcerated in Moroccan jails.


The delegation is headed by Véronique DeKeyser,Vice President of S & D Group, and includes Ana Gomes Group, spokesman, Norbert Neuser, President of the Intergroup on Western Sahara at EP, Mr. Antonio Panzeri, President of the Maghreb Delegation of the European Parliament, Maria Muñiz De Urquiza, the Spanish MEP, and Emmanuelle Texier, Coordinator of the Delegation, as well as several parliamentary assistants.
