Submitted on

Santiago de Compostelle (Galicia, Spain), June 16, 2013 (SPS) - The Parliament of Galicia has asked the Central Government of Spain to grant diplomatic status to the Polisario Front representation in Spain, as the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people recognized by the UN, as a first step towards the recognition of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, according to a statement quoted by the Spanish news agency (EFE).

The statement, which was issued and approved by the House, called on the Spanish State to carry Morocco to respect human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, the source said.

The Parliament expressed its commitment to a “just and lasting” solution that enables the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination, through a free referendum.

It also calls for the immediate release of all the Saharawi political prisoners and halt the illegal exploitation of Saharawi natural resources.

Copies of this statement will be sent to the representative of the UN Security Council, Spanish Government, Sahara group in the Congress, European Commission, POLISARIO Front Delegation in Spain and Moroccan government, the source added. (SPS)
