UN Decolonization Committee assesses Western Sahara question

Submitted on

New York, June 10, 2013 (SPS) - The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, also known as Fourth Committee or the Committee of 24, begins today two weeks of work to discuss the cases of the Falkland Islands, Puerto Rico and Western Sahara, among others.

The meeting will consider the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples and will analyze the situation in the 16 so-called non-self governing territories, as quoted by Prensa Latina.

The Western Sahara issue will also return to the discussion of the committee, this time amid a growing clamor for the UN mission (MINURSO) in the territory occupied by Morocco to monitor respect for human rights.

Other Latin American theme in the agenda refers to the status of Puerto Rico, whose right to self-determination has been ratified by the committee in a row over the past 13 years.

Registered in the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories since 1964, Western Sahara remains the last colony in Africa. (SPS)
