Activist Aminatou Haidar, AU guest of honor at OAU 50th Anniversary

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2013 (SPS) - The Saharawi activist Ms. Aminatou Haidar, guest of honor of the African Union at the OAU Golden Jubilee, has arrived in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, along with many of the world’s dignitaries, including former heads of state and Nobel Peace Prize laureates, human rights activists.


According to observers, this invitation is homage to the sacrifices made by Aminatou Haidar to embody the will of her people for freedom and live in dignity.


The move, they added, is a symbol of solidarity with the peaceful Saharawi uprising in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.


It is noteworthy that she won a number of international awards in recognition of her struggle in the defense of human rights in Western Sahara, including Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, Juan María Bandrés Award by The Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR), SOLIDAR’s Silver Rose Awards, Civil Courage Prize of RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights, in addition to numerous honorary citizenship awards in European countries.


Ms. Aminatou Haidar has led an international campaign to include the monitoring and report about human rights within the prerogatives of the MINURSO, UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara. (SPS)
