AU Summit: draft decision on Western Sahara submitted to African leaders for adoption

Submitted on

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2013 (SPS) - The Executive Council of the African Union (AU) adopted Friday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis-Ababa, 16 draft decisions, including that of Western Sahara, to be submitted to the 21st Summit of the Union Heads of State and Government (26- 27 May) for approval.

The concerned draft decision is about the first report of AU Commission Chairperson on Western Sahara situation.

The AU Executive Council requested from the Commission’s Chairperson to pursue efforts, notably to undertake new consultations with the parties (Polisario Front and Morocco) and continue dialogue with the UN and the concerned international parties.

It also asked her to submit an exhaustive report on the Western Sahara situation at the coming session of the Executive Council in January 2014.

AU Member States reiterated support to the UN resolutions on this issue, in particular the call for direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict, “without pre-conditions and in a good faith, in view to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that ensures self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”

They also decided to keep the Western Sahara issue at top of its concerns. (SPS)
