Presidency of Republic declares 7-day national mourning following death of Khalil Sid Mhamed

Shahed Al Hafed (refugee camps), April 28, 2013 (SPS) - Presidency of the Republic has declared 7-day national mourning starting from today, Sunday, following the sudden death of Khalil Sid Mhamed, member of the National Secretariat and Head of its Political Branches, on Saturday night due to cardiac arrest.


Bureau of the POLISARIO National Secretariat met Saturday night to Sunday and formed a national committee to follow up on the funeral and burial ceremony of the deceased, scheduled for Monday at 9 O’clock in the morning at the Cemetery of Smara.


Khalil Sid Mhamed was born on February 14th, 1947 in the region of Egleibàt Elfula in Western Sahara. He is married and father for 14 children, five boys and nine girls.


The deceased is one of the first to enlist in the ranks of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Sagia El Hamra and Rio de Oro (POLISARIO).


He assumed several positions in the Front and State, both inside and outside.


He served for several periods of time as a governor of various wilayas, and was appointed Minister of Education and Minister of Interior. He appointed as a minister of education, interior as well as occupied territories, communities abroad and national rural. He also served as an ambassador in Algiers.


He became a member of the Office of the POLISARIO National Secretariat and Head of Political Branches Secretariat after POLISARIO 13th Congress.


The deceased has been characterized by his humility, discipline, simplicity, seriousness, dedication and confidence in the ability of the people to achieve victory.


Khalil Sid Mhamed sacrificed his entire life to the service of the cause and the principles of the Frente POLISARIO. (SPS)
