Sahrawi people need "permanent and independent" mechanism for human rights monitoring

London, April18,2013(SPS) - The people of Western Sahara need a "permanent and independent" mechanism for human rights monitoring and reporting directly to the United Nations Security Council, in order to shed light on the abuses committed and the take the adequate measures, said Wednesday the Western Sahara Campaign.

"The different visits paid by UN representatives to the occupied territories will never be sufficient to shed light on the systematic violation of human rights in these territories," said Western Sahara Campaign, adding that every day, Sahrawi citizens are victim of arbitrary arrests, imprisonment and tortures just because they oppose Morocco's occupation of their lands.

"MINURSO (the UN Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara) is the only UN peacekeeping mission without a mandate to monitor human rights," said the NGO, which is member of the Western Sahara Action Forum (WSAF).

The forum is a new alliance of international organizations of several European, North American and Asian countries. (SPS)
