SADR President: since Hassan II’s death we have felt that we are in partnership for peace, but without a partner

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), April 1, 2013 (SPS) - “Since the death of Hassan II in mid-1999, we had the impression, day after day, that we are engaged in a partnership for peace, but without a partner,” stated the President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Frente POLISARIO Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, in an open letter addressed Saturday to the King of Morocco.

Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz said that Moroccan Kingdom has no positive response despite the concessions made by the Polisario Front over the recent years, last of which was the proposal on April 2007, which gave answers to all security, economic and social concerns of Moroccan State, in case the referendum on self-determination led to the option of independence.

“In spite of our procedural disagreements with your father, as a partner in peace who closely experienced the quarrel of war, on some of the issues related to the preparation for the popular consultation, but the principle of self-determination referendum, as an ultimate and sole goal for the course of settlement, remained loftier than all disputes,” stated the letter, which was sent in parallel with recent acts of repression and violence against Saharawi women in the occupied city of El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara.

He also recalled Moroccan King to the promises made by his father, King Hassan II, before the 37th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1983, when he said, in a famous speech, that Morocco “certifies you that it wants the referendum. He is ready to organize it tomorrow if you like. He also ready to put all the facilities before the deployment of international observers as for the cease-fire, in order that a fair and impartial popular referendum takes place ... Morocco pledges to you to respect any result the referendum will come up with.”

“Your father, Allah have mercy upon him, had realized the impossibility of subjugating and confiscating the Saharawi people’s will. So, he corrected it when he accepted the referendum on self-determination,” Saharawi President indicated. (SPS)
