UESARIO requests students’ organization to act in favor of Gdeim Izik prisoners

Bir Lehlou (liberated territories), March 9, 2013 (SPS) - The Saharawi Students Union (UESARIO) has requested students’ organization around the world to act in favour of the annulment of the sentences issued by Moroccan martial court in Rabat on Feb 17 th against 25 Saharawi political prisoners, in a letter sent by its Secretary General.


“It is an honour for me to address to you, on behalf of the Union of Students of Saguia el-Hamra and Rido de Oro (UESARIO), this letter to inform you about the suffering the Saharawi people, especially students, are subjected to,” writes the Secretary General of UESARIO Ahmed Lehbib Abdi.


The letter appealed to all students organizations throughout the world to address the issue of Gdeim Izik group at the international level, urging them to work for revoking these unjust sentences, ensuring the full respect for human rights in the occupied Western Sahara and supporting a UN human rights mechanism within MINURSO mandate.


“In line with the general principles of students’ organizations around the world, we in the UESARIO believe that the promotion and protection of human rights, especially the rights of student, and laying the foundation for democracy is a goal and responsibility of the entire international community, and is the responsibility of students organizations in the world, in particular. It is a substantial and pivotal obligation representing the bulwark that protects the student,” indicated the letter. (SPS)
