Paris, Feb 24, 2013 (SPS) - “The fundamental human rights of the Sahrawi populations are violated in Western Sahara,” said Friday in Paris the chief diplomatic advisor to the president of the European Parliament, Alexandre Stutzmann.
“Following the various missions carried out in Western Sahara territory, the evidence gathered by the European Parliament (EP) shows that the fundamental human rights of the Sahrawi people are violated,” he said in an interview to APS, on the sidelines of the meeting of the political steering committee of the Institute for the Economic Perspective of the Mediterranean World (IPEMED).
Stutzmann said that it was “important” for this European institution that “the right, the individual freedoms and the dignity of every person are respected” by Morocco in Western Sahara.
“It is also important for EP to be a defender of individual and human rights, and this intangible rule concerns also the right of Sahrawi people to self-determination, to which this European institution provides support and remains vigilant for its implementation,” he added.
“This principle guides all the political action led by the EP, whether worldwide or within its immediate neighbouring,” indicated Stutzmann. (SPS)
