Danish Association urges its country to take initiatives in Western Sahara conflict

Submitted on

Copenhagen (Denmark) Ocrober30, 2012(SPS) the Danish United Nations Association (UNA), urged its Country to take initiatives in Western Sahara conflict, in a resolution adopted by its annual Congress held in Copenhagen from 27 to 28 october2012.

“The focus must be put on conflicts at a time when it is possible for Denmark and the international community to achieve a peaceful solution - instead of the international community only reacts when a violent conflict again erupted with great human cost.” Said the UNA, asking for the implementation of the referendum which has been waited for more than 20 years to allow the Saharawi people to decide their destiny

The Association therefore calls on the Government of Denmark to “make an extra effort to start the peace process in Western Sahara, which since 1975 has been partially occupied by Morocco.”

The UNA asked Denmark to “reformulate its position and resume its opposition to trade in natural resources from Western Sahara”

It finally urged the Government of Denmark “to go against the EU's fishery agreement with Morocco since the agreement allowing EU fishermen access to Western Sahara's waters” and to “actively work for the UN mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO), which was established in 1991, will assume mandate to include human rights.”(SPS)
