Spanish deputies affirm determination to continue defending Saharawis’ self-determination

Madrid, Oct 15, 2012 (SPS) - Dozens of Spanish deputies from the parliamentary group “Peace and Freedom for the Saharawi People” and several parties including the People and Communist Party have approved a joint statement to move forward as to enhance the bonds of friendship with the Saharawi people, in light of discussions of the UN Decolonization Committee, informed POLISARIO Representation to Madrid.


The parliamentarians reaffirmed, in their joint statement, intention to intensify the efforts to enable the Saharawi people their right to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and recognized for decades by this latter, African Union and international community institutions.


“The process of decolonization in Western Sahara can only be ended through the exercise by the Saharawi people to their unyielding right to self-determination,” underlined the statement.


They also appealed to the Spanish state to take into consideration the current economic situation to provide the necessary support to the Saharawi cause.


They finally pledged to work in favour of expanding the powers of MINURSO mission, to be able to report about the state of human rights in the Territory of Western Sahara. (SPS)
