New York, October 12, 2012 (SPS) - The Delegation of Mexico to the United Nations reiterated Thursday “firm attachment” to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, during debate of the UN Fourth Committee on the issues of decolonization.

Mexico supports the efforts to find a just and lasting solution to the conflict of Western Sahara in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council, said the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations Mr. Rodrigo Pintado.

Mr. Pintado also called, in the name of Mexican delegation, for enabling the Saharawi people to decide, through a referendum that includes all options, their future, with consent of the parties concerned.

Mexico therefore reiterated the need to expand the powers of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to include the protection and monitoring of human rights, expressing support for efforts of the international community and the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy, Ambassador Christopher Ross, to achieve a just and lasting solution to the conflict of Western Sahara.
