President Mohamed Abdelaziz demands active role from AU in face of Morocco’s intransigence

Addis Ababa, July 16, 2012 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, called Monday on heads of state of the African Union “not to stay idly in front of Morocco’s intransigence, obstructions and violation of human rights in Western Sahara,” in a speech during the discussion of the report of AU Peace and Security Council.


“The African Union is an official partner of the UN and is therefore required to assume its responsibilities in monitoring the full implementation of UN settlement plan in Western Sahara to lead without delay to its essential purpose, the decolonization of the last colony in Africa, enabling the Saharawi people to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination and independence,” said President of the Republic.


The President of the Republic pointed out, in his speech, to severity of the latest Moroccan position, considering it “a culmination of a long path of procrastination and reneging from international obligations, which represents a disregard to resolutions of the international legitimacy and underestimation of African will in completing the liberation of African continent from the yoke of colonialism.”


He denounced on other hand the treacherous terrorist attack on the Saharawi people October 2011, where a group of coming from Mali kidnapped three European cooperators working in the humanitarian field from the Saharawi refugee camps, confirming his support to all the efforts being made to free these three the hostages and other as soon as possible.


Secretary General of the Polisario Front deplored condition of the Saharawi political prisoners, describing it as the “unfortunate condition” of flagrant injustice and blatant disregard to the international humanitarian law and human spirit.


He also appealed to the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to implement its mandate consistent with being an international mission, release all the Saharawi political prisoners in the hands of Morocco and unveil the whereabouts of more than 651 Saharawi disappeared. (SPS)
