New York, June 16, 2012 (SPS) - “Human rights were being violated, natural resources were being exploited and the promised referendum had not yet been held,” lamented Friday Ms. Jenny Lalama-Fernandez, Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Ecuador to the United Nation in his intervention on the matter of Western Sahara within the UN Special Committee on Declaration.

Ms. Fernandez expressed the support of her country to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.

She recalled that Secretary General had called, in its recent report, on the Security Council to enhance the credibility of United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), adding that the Council had adopted a resolution in April calling for the freedom of movement of that Mission.
