Madrid (Spain) June06,2012(SPS) – Socialist International Mediterranean Committee reiterated its support for the rights of Sahrawi people to self-determination, in a final statement adopted at the end of a meeting held Tuesday in Madrid at Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) headquarters.
The Mediterranean Committee “urges Morocco and Polisario Front to carry on negotiations for a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict under the auspices of the United Nations (UN).
The Socialist International (SI), "concerned about human rights situation in Western Sahara, committed to continue working with all parts in favour of democracy and human rights,” the same source added.
During this meeting, a contact group for Western Sahara was set up in the Mediterranean Committee and agreed that “the SI must support the negotiation process between parties as part of UN efforts and contribute to reach a solution in accordance with international law on the basis of democratic and socialist commitment.”
The committee “intends to take initiatives likely to help to reach a solution to the conflict,” “in this regard, it intends to pay a visit to Morocco and Western Sahara.”
The meeting was attended by a delegation of the Frente Polisario composed of the Minister Delegate for Europe Mohamed Sidati and the representative of the Polisario to Spain BuchrayaBeyun. (SPS)
