Smara (refugee camps), Feb 27, 2012 (SPS) - “The Saharawi Republic does not think in a prosperous and peaceful Maghreb without the independence of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR),” said Monday in the Wilaya of Smara, Saharawi refugee camps, the Saharawi Foreign Minister, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek.

“We do not believe in a peaceful Maghreb, as long Morocco refuses to respect the borders with its neighbors and occupies part of our country,” Mr. Ould Salek told the press on the sidelines of a meeting with a French delegation participating at the celebration of SADR proclamation.

He underlined that the only solution to sort out the conflict of the region “remains the independence of Saharawi state,” calling for respecting the democratic choice of Western Sahara.

The Minister took the opportunity to recall the Security Council to its responsibilities towards suffering of the Saharawi people, adding “it the sole guarantee for the agreement signed by Morocco and Polisario Front, namely the organization of a referendum of self-determination.”

“Security Council did not shoulder its responsibilities and did not act according to its duty,” he regretted, warning that this may have “serious consequences.”

On other hand, he underlined that blocking democracy and the French policy to support the Moroccan royal palace at any cost “increases the oppression of the Moroccan people and therefore all extremists can arise from a situation of this nature.”

The Saharawi Minister presented to the French delegation the genesis of the question of Western Sahara since its colonization by Spain and then by the Kingdom of Morocco as well as France’s support to the Moroccan occupation. (SPS)
