Submitted on

Berlin, Jan 15, 2012 (SPS) - In a response to an interpellation submitted by the Members of the Bundestag, the Federal Government of Germany has confirmed that its position in regard to Western Sahara natural resources is compatible with the view expressed in a letter from the Former Legal Counsel of the United Nations, Hans Corell, to the President of the UN Security Council, which requires the respect for natural resources of a non-self-governing territory.

In its response to 18 questions by Bundestag Members, the Federal Government of Germany said that its position on the question of Western Sahara natural resources “is compatible with the view expressed by Former Legal Counsel of the United Nations, Mr. Hans Corell, on the need to respect the natural resources of Western Sahara and stop its looting.

In relevant context, the German Government confirmed that there is no prospect at present of a new version of the fishing agreement between the EU and Morocco, especially after the Council Decision on the provisional application of the Protocol between the European Union and the Kingdom of Morocco setting out the fishing opportunities and financial compensation provided for in the Fisheries Partnership Agreement was immediately repealed.
