Cairo, Jan 14, 2012 (SPS) - Dr. Mohamed El-Baradei , a former head of the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog body, decided not to run in Egypt's presidential elections.
Baradei confirms that his decision doesn’t mean escaping from arena, but he can effectively serve his Country without restrictions.
He mentioned that it seems as if the previous regime hadn’t been excluded, and As if the revolution had not yet launched.
It is mentioned during an urgent press conference held Today’s afternoon for this purpose at his Elections headquarters, he mentioned that reasons which led him to take this step are resuming using violence against demonstrators, The Emergency status, along with he couldn’t find a suitable official position to serve his nation.
He said that position of “president” can’t allow him to serve Egypt during the current circumstances without a serious constitution which protect freedom of citizens.
He added the subjects of the constitution are fabricated within weeks.
ElBaradei, a former head of the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog body, had been seen as a frontrunner for the presidency, a post that has been empty since Hosni Mubarak was toppled from power by a mass uprising last February.
But his campaign has been weakened by divisions. In November, some of his campaigners quit, saying he had become cut off from his grassroots base.
ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, is respected on the international stage and among pro-democracy campaigners. But he has been criticized for being out of touch with ordinary Egyptians.
The military council which assumed Mubarak's powers says it will hand authority to an elected president by the end of June. It has yet to set a date for the presidential election.
