Port-au-Prince (Haiti), Jan 7, 2012 (SPS) - More than 7,000 people died of cholera in Haiti in 2011 and 520,000, over 5 percent of the population, was infected, according to the Ministry of Health.
The source added that every day, dozens of cases are reported and that cholera might become an endemic disease as common as the flu.
Haitian human rights organizations have reported since late 2011 that several humanitarian organizations left the country at a critical moment in the evolution of the disease.
According to French and U.S. studies, the disease was transmitted by the staff of the Nepalese base of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH)
A group of Haitian lawyers representating more than 5,000 cholera patients threatened in December to bring the UN to courts if their demand for compensation is not met.
