Polisario Front calls on UN to accelerate decolonization of Western Sahara

Chahid El Hafed (refugee camps), January 4, 2012 (SPS) -The Polisario Front urged Tuesday the United Nations to accelerate the decolonization of Africa last colony through a referendum of self-determination to the Saharawi people in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant resolutions of the Security Council, according to statement concluded the work of first ordinary session of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front.

Polisario Front reiterated  request of the necessity to expand the powers of UN Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to include protection and monitoring of human rights in Western Sahara, the statement added.

It also welcomed the decision of US Congress conditioning military aid to Morocco by respect for human rights in Western Sahara.

National Secretariat stressed that this decision is a "positive" step to support the demand for the establishment of a UN mechanism to protect Saharawi citizens in occupied territories of Western Sahara, calling on UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities in the region.

It demanded "immediate and unconditional" release of all Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan jails, including prisoners of Gdeim Izik Camp who are still languishing in prison of Sale (Morocco) for over 14 months without trial.

National Secretariat  has urged French government to cease its unconditional support to Morocco and contribute to efforts of the international community calling for help the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination as recognized by international law.
