SADR partakes in bi-annual Joint AU / ICRC Seminar

Addis Ababa, Nov 15, 2011 (SPS) – A Saharawi delegation headed by SADR Ambassador to Republic of South Sudan, Hamadi Bachir took part Saturday in bi- annual Joint AU / ICRC Seminar on the theme of: “The Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflicts and Other Situations of Violence in Africa” held In Addis Ababa.

 

The Seminar marked by speeches of Vice President of the International Commission of the Red Cross (ICRC), Christine Beerli, Head of Humanitarian Affairs, Refugees and Displaced Persons Division in AU Department of Foreign Affairs  as well as academics dealt with the theme “The Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflicts”.

 

Bi-annual Joint AU / ICRC Seminar discusses the challenges and threats faced by civilians both in the context of armed conflicts and in other situations of violence such as internal tensions or internal disturbances, and remind States on their legal obligations towards civilians under international law.

 

It also offers  the opportunity to clarify how different actors, from humanitarian to peace support mission, while acknowledging their different role and responsibilities, can all distinctly contribute to the protection of civilians in line with their respective mandate.

 

Saharawi delegation held talks with representatives of AU Member States, ICRC responsible, and experts.

 

The delegation comprises of the ambassador to Republic of Sudan and second Secretary of the SADR Embassy in Addis Ababa. (SPS)
