Madrid, Nov 13, 2011 (SPS) - Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Willy Meyer, underlined that the Spanish government has “a historic debt towards the Saharawi people like what was done by Portugal in the case of East Timor,” in a demonstration organized Saturday in Madrid by the Spanish Movement of Solidarity with the Saharawi People on the eve of the date of signing of the Tripartite Madrid Accords.

The EU Deputy Willy Meyer, PP member Ignacio Uriarte, the Spanish actress Rosa María Sardá and others carried a banner reads: vote for the independence of Western Sahara and for the release of the Saharawi political detainees.

The Spanish Movement of solidarity with the Saharawi people called on the next government of its country to defend the Saharawis right to self-determination and to protect human rights in Western Sahara, criticizing the absence of the Spanish responsibility, as an administering power, according to the requirements of the international law.

It also appealed to Madrid to recognize the Saharawi Republic and Polisario Front, as a legitimate and only representative of the Saharawi people, and to cooperate and coordinate with them in areas of the humanitarian action. (SPS)
