Santiago de Chile, October 19, 2011 (SPS) - Saharawi Ambassador on a mission, Mohamed Laroussi Zroug, was received Friday by the President of the Human Rights Commission of the Chilean Senate, Mariano Ruiz-Esquide, who informed him about the latest developments concerning the humanitarian and political situation in Western Sahara, according to an officials source close to MFA.
The Saharawi diplomat expressed thanks and appreciation to his interlocutor for the traditional support of Chile to the struggle of the Saharawi people to recover its legitimate rights to freedom, self-determination and independence.
He praised the role played by Chile in the defense of human rights in different parts of the world.
The Saharawi diplomat expressed the concern of the Sahrawi government and the international community about the deteriorating human rights in the occupied territories of SADR, and the presence of dozens of political prisoners languishing in Moroccan jails.
From his part, the Chilean Senator Mariano Ruiz-Esquide expressed the support of his institution for the respect of fundamental rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
The Republic of Chile is a member of the UN Human Rights Council whose headquarters are in Geneva, it should be recalled. (SPS)
