Conclusion of work of preparatory meeting of International Conference for Solidarity with Sahrawi women in Nigeria

Abuja (Nigeria), June 28, 2011 (SPS) – The work of the preparatory meeting of the International Conference for solidarity with Sahrawi Women to be held in Abuja, Nigeria, September 27-29, with the approval of the broad outlines of the conference.

Mrs. Basirat Nahibi, the President of Women Advancement for Economic and Leadership Empowerment in Africa (WAELE), the initiator, indicated in her opening intervention of the meeting that “the conference comes to reaffirm the commitment of African women to support their Sahrawi sisters in their march for freedom, independence and promotion of Sahrawi women,” adding that organizing it in Africa sends “a clear message to the international community as an expression of collective feeling of African women and men that their freedom is not completed unless the Saharawi people enjoyed their natural right to freedom and independence."

The meeting was attended by delegates of the WAELE from the five geographical regions, representatives of some civil society, trade unions and human rights organizations in Nigeria and Nigerian solidarity movement with the Saharawi people. It was also attended by the Secretary General of the National Union of Sahrawi Women, Fatima Mahdi.

The opening session was attended by the SADR Ambassador in Abuja, Mr. Abbi Bushraya Bashir. (SPS)
