Washington, June 8, 2011 (SPS) The United States Department of State said Tuesday that the UN process is’ the best way forward’ to resolve the question of Western Sahara , expressing support to Ross's effort, in a statement made by the spokesman for the State Department, Mark Toner, during his daily briefing.
Responding to question about US position on peace talks between Polisario Front and Morocco in, Manhasset Mr. Toner argued that ''there is a UN process in place, as evidenced by meetings of New York''.
''We believe that this process is the best way forward. But certainly, we want a peaceful solution to this situation. ''The United States supports this UN process and will continue to do so, '' he reiterated.
In its resolution 1979 adopted unanimously last April, the Security Council reiterated its commitment to help the two parties of the conflict to reach a ''just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution allowing self- determination for Western Sahara people.''
The Security Council urged both parties to show greater political will for reaching solution, including discussing, with more details, the two proposals
