Washington, June 8, 2011 (SPS) - The State Department asserted Tuesday that the UN process is ''the best way forward'' to resolve the question of Western Sahara and that the United States will continue to support this process, in a statement made by the spokesperson of the State Department, Mr. Mark Toner, during his daily briefing.
Asked about the U.S. position on this issue as the seventh informal meeting between the Polisario Front and Morocco took place in Manhasset (New York), Mr. Toner supported that ''there is a UN process in place , as evidenced by the meetings in New York (between the two parties to the conflict).
“We also believe that this process is the best way forward. But certainly, we want to see a peaceful solution to this situation.'' The United States ''supports this UN process and will continue to do so,'' he reiterated.
It should be recalled that in its resolution 1979, adopted unanimously April, the Security Council reiterated its commitment to help the two parties in the conflict to reach a ''just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to enable the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.''
Considering ''maintaining the status quo is not acceptable in the long term,'' the Security Council urged both parties to '' demonstrate greater political will to find a solution, including discussing in more detailed way their respective proposals.'' (SPS)
