The Dean of the Northern African Region deposits the Algerian Candidate’s File for the position of the African Union DCP

Addis Ababa (African Union), July 31, 2024 (SPS) – The Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Republic to the African Union, Amb. Lamin Baali, in his capacity as Dean of the North African Group, deposited the candidacy file for Algeria’s nominee for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The elections for the leadership of the Union are scheduled to take place during the summit in February 2025.

The file was submitted to the Office of the Legal Counsel of the Union, represented by the Legal Counsel, Dr. Gajer Gueldich, in the presence of the Deputy Permanent Representative of Algeria and Charge d’Affaires, Dr. Mohamed Khaled.

It is noteworthy that the upcoming elections will allow African countries to present candidates for the leadership positions within the Union. Specifically, the position of Chairperson of the Commission will be contested exclusively by Eastern African countries, while the Deputy Chair position is reserved for North African countries.

The remaining positions of the six AU Commissioners will be contested by candidates from the other countries of the remaining three regions of the African Union, with each region competing for two Commissioner posts.

Additionally, it is worthy to mention that the Sahrawi Republic has held the position of Dean of the North African region for several years now. The region includes the Sahrawi Republic, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Morocco. (SPS)
