Frente POLISARIO Representative at the UN: It is the Sahrawi people who decide the Present and Future of Western Sahara, not France or any other country

New York (United Nations), 30 July 2024 (SPS) - Member of the National Secretariat, Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, Dr Sidi Mohamed Omar, stated today that the present and future of Western Sahara are decided by the Sahrawi people and not by France or any other country.

The statement was a response to a question raised by the Correspondent of the Spanish News Agency (Efe) at the United Nations about the content of the letter sent by the French president to the Moroccan king in which he stated that his country considers “that the present and future of Western Sahara” lie within the framework of the so-called “Moroccan sovereignty”.

The Sahrawi diplomat also stressed that the French position contradicts international law and France’s international responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council because it supports the illegal occupation of Western Sahara, which is a territory awaiting decolonisation. He further underlined that neither France nor Morocco can break the will of the Sahrawi people who will continue their struggle for independence by all legitimate means.

The Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO concluded by stressing that, by adopting this hostile attitude towards the Sahrawi people, France has excluded herself from everything related to the international efforts to decolonise Western Sahara.

Today, the Frente POLISARIO condemned in the strongest terms the recent French position in support of the unjust Moroccan occupation and stressed that France is no longer qualified to be part of MINURSO after flouting international legality owing to its blatant and biased position towards the Moroccan proposal.
