Algiers, 29 July 2024 (SPS) - The International Federation of Journalists in Solidarity with the Saharawi People on Monday vigorously condemned the French government's decision to support Morocco's "so-called autonomy plan" on Western Sahara, a territory on the UN list of non-self-governing territories since 1963.
"The International Federation of Journalists in solidarity with the Saharawi People vigorously condemns the decision of France to support the so-called autonomy plan proposed by Morocco for Western Sahara," she wrote in a statement.
The Federation said the French decision "is against UN resolutions," stressing that it was "doubly condemnable" as it "comes from a Security Council member country that is violating international legality, supporting a colonial fait accompli, Namely that of Morocco over Western Sahara, yet it is declared a non-self-governing territory by the United Nations.
The international organization expressed "great disappointment" with the French State which, through such a step, "goes against the tide of history and turns its back to the peace process launched several decades ago."
