Algiers, 10 February 2024 (SPS) -The Unites States (US) Ambassador to Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin, said that the conflict in Western Sahara had "gone on long enough", recalling that Washington backs the settlement of the conflict "within the framework of the United Nations and through the work of the UN SG's personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura.”
The ambassador said in an interview with the Algerian newspapers “Al-Watan” and "Al-Khabar," “This conflict has continued for a long enough time. 47 years is a long time for the Sahrawi people.”
Elizabeth Moore Aubin noted that the United States “agrees on the need to give Staffan de Mistura the space and opportunity to work in order to reach a political solution to the situation in Western Sahara.”
"As in the Sahel, the USA and Algeria see the situation in Libya very similarly. We completely agree that the Libyan people should be able to decide on their government and their future," she said, noting that Washington also agreed with Algiers that foreign forces should leave Libya.
"We also agree that foreign forces are destabilizing and are not helping the Libyan people to decide their future,” she said, noting that her country and Algeria "talk frequently about the situation in Libya.”
Turning to the situation in Gaza, Palestine, the US ambassador stated that "the United States supports the two-state solution and is deeply concerned by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave.”
