Moroccan occupation authorities assault Sahrawi activists as they protest against Morocco’s candidacy for the presidency of the Human Rights Council

Occupied Laayoune, January 9, 2024 (SPS) - The Moroccan occupation forces launched a barbaric attack targeting a number of Sahrawi activists in the occupied city of Laayoune in an attempt to prevent them from demonstrating to denounce Morocco’s candidacy for the presidency of the UN Human Rights Council, according to a Sahrawi human rights source.

According to the same source, the Moroccan occupation authorities cordoned off the streets of the occupied city of Laayoune yesterday, especially Smara Street. They also imposed tight surveillance on many of the Sahrawi activists’ homes as they attempted to protest against Morocco’s candidacy to assume the presidency of the Human Rights Council, considering it a setback and a serious defect in the universality and comprehensiveness of the human rights system.

After the Sahrawi activists began their protest by chanting slogans and raising the Sahrawi national flag near Skikima Street, added the source, the female activists Salha Butangiza, Khadijetu Al-Dawih, Al-Salka Amar, Jamila Al-Mujahid, and Huda Bagna were subjected to harassment and abuse by members of the Moroccan occupation police in civilian clothes. They were also surrounded inside the home of the activist Al-Salka Amar and prevented from participating in a peaceful protest in condemnation of Morocco’s candidacy to assume the presidency of the Human Rights Council.

Most of the streets of the occupied city of Laayoune also witnessed tight surveillance, especially Smara Street, where many demonstrators were subjected to violence, including Mina Abaali, Ghali Ajna, Hassana Al-Dwihi, and Laarousi Taglbout.
