Toledo (Spain), 3 December 2023 (SPS) - The Polisario Front will continue to demand that Spain assume its moral, legal, and political responsibilities towards the Sahrawi people, said its representative in Spain, Abdellah Arabi.
"We have a political strategy towards any government in Spain, which consists of asking this country to assume its moral, legal, and political responsibilities towards the Sahrawi people and the Western Sahara," Mr. Arabi said in a statement to APS, on the sidelines of the 47th conference of the European Coordination for Support and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO) which is being held in Toledo since Friday.
The Sahrawi diplomat said that this strategy is based on the principle that the Western Sahara remains a decolonization issue, as inscribed in the UN, which should allow the Sahrawi people to decide their own fate through a referendum on self-determination.
The representative of the Polisario Front in Spain also regretted the fact that the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, "has taken a position in favor of Morocco's expansionist theses in the Western Sahara," noting that the head of the Spanish executive, re-elected to power for a second term following a vote in Parliament, will nevertheless have to work with a coalition government of which part displays unconditional support for the just cause of the Sahrawi people.
On the other hand, Mr. Arabi expects that the conclusions of the EUCOCO conference "will adopt a strategy to continue efforts to help the Sahrawi people in their struggle for their complete independence."
He particularly noted that "the various interventions of the participants in this event demonstrate the quality of support for the Sahrawi people around the world, in Europe, Africa, and Latin America."
Finally, the Sahrawi diplomat expressed his satisfaction with the fact that EUCOCO has discussed the situation in Palestine, where the Zionist entity is carrying out a genocidal aggression in Gaza, stressing that the Sahrawis are in solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people.
"It is necessary for civil movements in Europe in particular to stand alongside the peoples who are fighting for freedom, independence, and justice," he insisted.
It is worth noting that the work of the 47th EUCOCO conference resumed on Saturday at the Congress Palace in Toledo, with the participation of more than 300 representatives of delegations from all over the world.
The conference, which began the previous day under the slogan "Independence is the only solution," brings together representatives of governments that recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), European deputies and elected officials, political and trade union organizations, friendship associations with the Sahrawi people, NGOs, lawyers, and figures from the field of culture, to define new programs and working strategies for solidarity movements with the Sahrawi people.
On the second and final day of the work, the participants will be divided into the 4 workshops scheduled for the conference. These are the workshops on "Politics and Communication," "Human Rights and Sahrawi Political Prisoners," "Sahrawi Natural Resources," and "Consolidation of the Sahrawi State."
A final declaration will conclude the work.
