Shahid Al-Hafed, November 14, 2023 (SPS) - The Sahrawi Republic participated yesterday in the 8th Specialized Technical Committee on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (STC on GEWE) held between November 8 and 13, 2023.
The meeting, which was held via video conferencing technology, was attended by the AU Ministers in charge of Gender and Women’s Affairs and their Experts.
It also considered what has been achieved in the field of gender equality and women’s empowerment and listened to the countries' regional reports in this field, as well as the report of the African Union Commission (AUC)’s Women, Gender and Youth Directorate (WGYD), and the most important achievements in this regard.
This meeting aims to formulate a unified African position that will be presented during the 68th session of the United Nations on women’s issues, scheduled to be held in March 2024.
In her speech, Sahrawi Minister of Social Affairs and Women’s Promotion, Ms. Swilma Beiruk, emphasized the most important gains achieved by Sahrawi women in recent years and their attainment of the highest positions in the Sahrawi state.
In the same context, she denounced the violence practiced against Sahrawi women in the occupied zones of the Sahrawi Republic and the policies of discrimination and ignorance against them, calling on Member States to work diligently to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence.
