Algiers, 7 October 2023 (SPS) - The President of the friendship and fraternity parliamentary group “Algeria-Western Sahara” Miloud Tissouh affirmed Friday, in New York, that the only acceptable framework for the decolonization of Western Sahara must be under the supervision of the United Nations, calling on it to honor its commitments towards this just cause.
Speaking during the works of the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee, Tissouh lamented “the inaction of the international community and the incapability of the United Nations to guarantee the Sahrawi people’s legitimate right to self-determination,” the People’s National Assembly said in a statement.
After broaching the UN resolutions which affirm the right of peoples to self-determination, particularly those related to the just cause of Western Sahara, the official said that “the non-implementation of the UN resolutions encouraged the Moroccan occupier to continue violating the right of the Sahrawi people to justice and freedom.”
At the end of his speech, Tissouh called on the United Nations to “honor its commitments vis-à-vis Western Sahara and put an end to the plundering of their natural resources and its people’s suppression.”
