Bogotá (Colombia), October 05, 2023 (SPS) - The President of Colombia, Mr. Gustavo Petro Orrego, received yesterday at the Headquarters of the State in Bogotá, the Sahrawi Ambassador, Ammah Yahdih who presented his credentials as Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to Colombia, in the presence of the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Álvaro Leva Duran.
During the credentials' ceremony, the Colombian President affirmed his support for the Sahrawi people in their struggle for their independence and national sovereignty.
The Sahrawi Ambassador thanked President Gustavo Petro for his courageous decision to restore diplomatic relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. He also conveyed the gratitude of the Sahrawi people and their government for the decision of President Gustavo to achieve justice in this regard.
In the same context, Ammah Yahdih El-Nen expressed the support of the Sahrawi people and their government for President Gustavo Petro for his tireless efforts in the struggle for comprehensive peace in Colombia and the world, stressing that “the Colombian leader’s active role in helping oppressed people in parts of the world is a source of inspiration for all those who struggle for their legitimate rights, as is the case for the Sahrawi people.”
On the 27th of September, the Embassy of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in Colombia was officially opened in the presence of about a hundred guests, including government officials, diplomats, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, parliamentarians from the Andean region, university presidents, academics, and jurists, in addition to friends of the Sahrawi people in this country.
The Republic of Colombia recognized the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic on February 27, 1985, during the administration of President Belisario Betancur Cuartas.
