Geneva (Switzerland), June 24, 2021 (SPS) - South Africa reaffirmed the principle of the inviolability of the borders inherited after independence in Africa and the right of the peoples of the former colonial lands to self-determination and independence, reiterating its position of principle on the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people, in accordance with the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
In the words of his Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Mr. Emcholoski Nkosi, during the high-level virtual conference, Mr. Nkosi stated that “support for the self-determination of the Saharawi people is based on the principles of pluralism, legitimacy and the search for a just and lasting political solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, asking the African Union and the United Nations General Assembly to set a date for the referendum to be held according to the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice of the October 16, 1975 ”.
The South African diplomat also expressed “the unequivocal and firm support of his government for the mandate and mission of MINURSO and urged the United Nations Security Council to assume its responsibility and guarantee the application of a neutral and balanced approach that would help the parties to move towards an agreement ”.
