Polisario Front condemns Spain's refusal to assume its legal responsibilities

Madrid, 4 February 2023 (SPS) - The Polisario Front representative in Spain, Abdullah Arabi, warned against allowing the conflict in Western Sahara to continue, especially as Spain is evading its legal responsibilities towards the Sahrawi cause.
Abdullah Arabi issued a press release following a "high-level meeting that brought together Spain and Morocco", in which the Saharawi official recalled that the Polisario Front has repeatedly reaffirmed that "stability and security" in the region are "dependent on a definitive solution that must be found to the conflict, through which the Sahrawi people will be able to establish their independent State which constitutes a factor of balance and stability in the region".
The Polisario Front "affirms once again that prolonging the conflict, while Spain evades its legal responsibilities, will only increase tension and contribute to the non-establishment of peace and security to which the peoples of the region aspire," he added.
During "the high-level meeting that brought together Spain and Morocco", the head of the Spanish government made "more concessions, especially on the question of Western Sahara, especially since he reiterated again the position of his government in support of the Moroccan occupation, totally ignoring the legal status of the territory and the historical and legal responsibility of the Spanish state, as an administering power in Western Sahara".
For Mr. Arabi, the attitude of the Spanish side that ignored, during the meeting, the disturbing situation of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and concluded several agreements with the Moroccan occupation, proves that "the Socialist Party (PSOE) in the Spanish government, will have preferred to continue to submit international law and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, to the geostrategic and economic interests.
The Sahrawi diplomat called on Spain to respect international law, to assume its responsibilities and seek its interests, so as not to oppose international law and legality, like the rest of the regimes in the current multilateral world order.
The Polisario Front expressed its condemnation of this Spanish position which "directly impacts the legal status of the territory which is listed under the UN resolutions for non-self-governing territories and subject to the decolonization process.
A status reaffirmed by several rulings issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
