42nd anniversary of the shameful Madrid agreements

Chahid El Hafed, Nov 14, 2017 (SPS) - Today is the 42nd anniversary of the signing of the infamous Madrid Accord, which meant the abandonment of Spain to its historical responsibilities towards the Saharawi people, in breach of its obligation to conclude decolonization of Western Sahara, through the holding of a referendum of self-determination, as settled by the United Nations in 1966.

The shameful plot, known by the Tripartite Agreement of Madrid, was signed in the Spanish capital on November 14, 1975 between Spain, the Moroccan regime and Mauritania, in order to abort the right of self-determination of the Saharawi people and to legalize the invasion of the Saharawi territory by the countries involved in the agreement.

The illegality of the agreement, according to the jurists, is due, among other factors, to the absence of the Saharawi party, that is, unilateral action; and that the agreement had an expiration date, February 26, 1976, whose arrival would amount to the nullity of the treaty.

42 years after the aforementioned agreement, Western Sahara is part of the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories pending decolonization; It is the last colony in Africa and all United Nations resolutions and international legality in general, endorse the exercise of the right to self-determination of its people. This right is defended by the African Union, where the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), recognized by more than 80 countries, is a founding member.

The rejection of the Madrid Agreement is periodically expressed by the movement of solidarity with the Saharawi people, whose effort keeps alive the healthy tradition of holding mass demonstrations in Madrid to condemn the abandonment and betrayal of Spain. SPS
